Passion for helping others
Dr Phoebe Hong
A LOVE of Cairns and a dedication to improving the health of her patients is what defines Dr Phoebe Hong.
The specialist obstetrician, gynaecologist and laparoscopic surgeon offers flexible treatment options together with care and understanding of what can be a sensitive issue for many women.
“I think I’m approachable. My patients can easily ask me any questions and I explain the process very thoroughly, such as talking about what to expect during and after surgery,” Phoebe says.
“What my patients love most about my approach is I’m not doctor-like. I’ve got my own sense of humour and I can relate to them. That puts them right at ease.”
After graduating with a medical degree from the University of Auckland in 2006, Phoebe commenced specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology before deciding to head across the ditch to work at Cairns Hospital.
It was during her time there that she fell in love with Cairns and its friendly, welcoming atmosphere.
“My husband and I have always wanted to live in a smaller place, away from metropolitan cities, and Cairns is just perfect from every aspect,” she says.
Wishing to provide more women in the Far North with access to advanced laparoscopy, Phoebe then moved south to complete a two-year fellowship in Advanced Hysteroscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeries.
Upon her return to Cairns, the bubbly surgeon started her own private practice at Flecker House and hasn’t looked back since.
“Working in private practice, there’s more continuous care. You get to build that relationship and seeing their health improve under your care is very rewarding. That’s what I enjoy most,” she says.
Indeed, Phoebe is passionate about her field and its potential to change lives with the right treatment.
She is also one of the few medical professionals in Cairns to offer advanced gynaecology laparoscopic surgery or keyhole surgery – a minimally invasive alternative which covers several procedures including severe endometriosis, fibroid removal (myomectomy), and cerclage (cervical suture).
“In the past women would have had to travel to Townsville or Brisbane for advanced gynaecology laparoscopic surgery, so now I’m able to offer it here locally,” she says.
In December, Phoebe will be moving into her own stand-alone practice at Central Plaza Doctors, continuing to serve a growing number of patients.
