Helping thousands succeed

You would be hard pressed to find anyone more passionate about helping people achieve their career dreams than Joann Pyne, General Manager of TAFE Queensland North.
After more than 20 years at TAFE, the Cairns local knows everything there is to know about TAFE. She has been instrumental in developing a range of award-winning programs that have responded to business, industry and community needs.
She started at TAFE as a Planning Officer, worked in marketing, became the Faculty Manager in tourism and hospitality, the Faculty Manager in trades, Education Manager and Institute Director at Mt Isa before being named General Manager of the Cairns, Townsville and Mt Isa campuses in 2013.
“While I’ve done a lot of different jobs, the thing that keeps me here and what I love is seeing the change that TAFE makes in people’s lives,” she said. “It’s really very rewarding.”
She is determined to ensure TAFE continues to be premier training provider and an advocate of indigenous vocational education in Queensland.
“I’ve seen thousands of success stories,” she said. “Being part of those stories is just wonderful.
“Another thing I love about TAFE is that the teachers and staff are really keen for students to succeed,” said Joann, who oversees more than 500 staff. “I’m really proud of our staff, who work really hard to get the outcomes we do.”
As Joann marks her 21st year at TAFE later in the year, she has no plans to leave.
“TAFE is in my bones now,” she said. “I can’t imagine being anywhere else.”
