Aside from family and close friends, one of the best relationships you can have is with your hairdresser.

A good hairstylist is someone who knows the industry well, is experienced, consults with you at all times, can make suggestions on what cut and colour would suit you best and, most importantly, give you the perfect style that leaves you feeling happy and confident.

Such is the case with Saskia Wright, owner of Salon Saskia on McLeod St, who is well known for her honest and down-to-earth approach and her genuine relationships with each client.

With more than two decades’ experience in the industry, including three operating her own salon, Saskia has a passion almost unrivalled in the industry.

“I’ve been hairdressing for over 20 years now, and I just love it,” she said. “I really enjoy the relationships with all my clients and the time we spend together. Sometimes it feels like I’m at home with my friends!”

Saskia is the only hairdresser in her salon, a choice she deliberately made.

“I like to keep that personal feel so each client gets 100 per cent of my attention and I’m not handing them around to other people,” she said. “It’s about having that personal relationship. I think that’s why clients keep coming back because they enjoy that one-on-one service.”

While Saskia grew up in Cairns and did her hairdressing apprenticeship locally, she has travelled extensively, learning from experienced hairstylists along the way.
“I have worked around the world and met a lot of people and worked with a lot of other hairdressers,” she said. “I think working with people from all over the world has improved my hairdressing skills enormously.”

Saskia also keeps up-to-date on the latest trends, products and techniques by attending expos and training sessions and happily shares that knowledge with clients. She also offers free consultations to clients who are looking for a change.

“If a client feels like they are stuck in a rut having had the same hairstyle for awhile, I will offer my advice on what would look great on them, but I don’t push them,” she said.

“Some clients stick with exactly the same hair style they’re used to and are happy with that, which is great. Others want to completely change their look by cutting their hair or changing the colour, and I always make sure they are 100 per cent certain before we do. I love helping clients look great, and a new style can take years off their looks. I’ve not had anyone disappointed with the outcome when they’ve tried a new style.”

Saskia believes the key to her success is simple.

“It’s all about listening to your clients 100 per cent and finding out what they want, not what you want to do,” she said. “I believe it’s important that my clients feel completely comfortable with me knowing I will help them look their best.”
