While Northern Property Valuers (NPV) has been a trusted valuation company for 30 years it was after Trevor Gard bought the business five years ago that it grew to become one of the leading residential, commercial and rural property valuation firms in Far North Queensland.
What was a two-man operation in a small Mareeba office when Trevor took over at the helm has now grown to include seven staff, another office in Cairns and two new branches opening up – one on the Sunshine Coast and another in PNG. NPV has also started a Property Agency, a new division of the company designed to be a one-stop shop for property buyers.
The success of its growth is even more noteworthy, considering it expanded during tough economical times in Far North Queensland.
“There were definitely turbulent times for FNQ businesses over the past five years, but all the people who have been involved with NPV since I bought it and the foundation that previous owner Max Dickenson created has all contributed to our growth,” said Trevor. “Max, who still works with us, is respected among the Mareeba community and guided me during difficult times.”
Trevor is a proud Far North Queensland local who is passionate about the region and all his employees are locals.
“We are conscious of supporting the local community,” he said. “Our local knowledge and expertise ensures that clients get the best results and service every time. Our money doesn’t go anywhere else except here.”
Trevor credits his team with the company’s rise to success.
“Bruce joined as a valuer in 2013 and since then we have not looked back,” Trevor said. “Bruce, who became a partner in 2015, has a great work ethic and traditional country values.
“Christine Benjamin, who looks after the day-to-day running of the office, is the machine behind the business. Her local knowledge, especially in the Tableland region, and her previous real estate experience has benefited the business immensely.”
Family also play a huge part in the business. Hayley Gard, who is a qualified valuer and specialises in commercial valuations, has helped guide the company’s success with her attention to detail in data control and report writing. Trevor’s niece Jemma Jattke, who is studying to become a property valuer, started in 2016. Bruce’s brother Michael is NPV’s latest cadet and is based out of the Mareeba office with Bruce.
Also part of the successful team and most recent valuer is Bob McPhail.
“Bob’s local knowledge of the property industry and contacts has been a real asset to our Cairns office,” Trevor said.
Annette Martin looks after the administration duties in Mareeba, and the team relies on her patience and professional nature.
“We have an excellent team who want to come through the office doors every morning,” Trevor said. “We don’t plan to be the largest valuation firm in the region; we just strive to be the best.”
